At the end of 2024, Huawei Digital Power became the first company in the world to receive the highest-level safety certification for battery energy storage systems (BESS) from TÜV Rheinland, marking a significant milestone in the industry.
TÜV Rheinlandis a globally recognized independent institution specializing in inspections, testing, and certification. However, due to the dynamic growth of the energy storage sector worldwide, current industry standards are no longer sufficient to support the quality development of this field.
For this reason, TÜV Rheinland decided to further refine the existing standards for energy storage safety by creating a comprehensive safety classification for specific BESS applications. The aim of this effort is to ensure high-quality and sustainable growth for the energy storage industry.
Three Levels of Safety TÜV Rheinland’s safety classification consists of three levels:
First (Basic) Level: BESS meets the basic requirements, regulations, and standards in safety for market introduction.
Second Level (Plus): BESS is equipped with features ensuring enhanced mechanical, electrical, thermal, and environmental protection. This system prevents fires caused by thermal runaway at the battery pack level.
Third Level (Prime): BESS prevents the spread of thermal runaway even in extreme situations where fires are caused by external factors, ensuring the safety of personnel.
Focus on Innovation and Development In December 2024, TÜV Rheinland awarded Huawei Digital Power the Level 3 (Prime) Safety Certificate, marking a significant milestone in the industry. This certification underscores the unparalleled safety features of the BESS Smart String & Grid Forming platform developed by Huawei Digital Power.

This innovation sets new higher quality standards for the energy storage sector," said Weichun Li, Vice President at TÜV Rheinland Group.
Zhou Tao, President of the Smart PV & ESS Product Line at Huawei Digital Power, expressed gratitude to TÜV Rheinland for awarding the industry's first certificate that guarantees the highest safety levels of BESS for Huawei.

BESS safety is a critical prerequisite for the sustainable and high-quality growth of the renewable energy sector.
